The Whole and the Part

"A Human Being is part of a whole, called by us the Universe, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings, as something separated from the rest, a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circles of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty".

I happened to read the above quote in today's newspaper. I had to reread the name of the person to whom the above quote was attributed. Because it was Albert Einstein and not some spiritual guru!!
Basically I am not a very spiritual person. Anything remotedly metaphysical opens the sceptic's eye in me. But many of the notions held as fundamental truth by the religious in a way suggest almost the same thing as many basic principles of science. For eg Newtons law of thermo dynamics and few slokas I had learnt long back, I dont remember exactly. I shall back on this again, some time later.
